In this piece, Phua explores his feelings of loneliness through childhood. With this isolation came the lament of growing up too fast, but also an appreciation of being left alone to grow more observant and introspective. Overgrown is a visual representation of this simultaneous presence of both decay and flourish.

As an artist whose primary medium is digital, Phua has always felt a yearning for physicality and tangibility, both in the process of making and the outcome. Overgrown is his first exploration in translating digital work to a physical form, making it a landmark moment within his practice.
